Sunshine Stars FC of Akure underwent a significant change on Monday as they parted ways with Head Coach Edith Agoye and three assistant coaches. The announcement came during a meeting led by Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Bamidele Ologunloluwa, in Akure, marking a new phase for the team’s coaching staff.
As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Agoye and assistant coaches Akin Olowokere, Banjo Adepoju, and Folorunsho Stephen were relieved of their duties during the meeting. Ologunloluwa cited a series of disappointing performances and repeated ultimatums issued by the management as the rationale behind the decision.
The commissioner stressed the urgency of the situation, stating that waiting until the team faced relegation battles was not an option. He expressed disappointment, saying, “Despite the support provided to the coaching staff, the team has not met expectations. It’s unfortunate that we have come to this juncture.”
“It’s not going to be business as usual, I don’t want to fight relegation anymore, it is not about witch-hunting. Once a technical crew is not performing, the job is about hiring and firing like you know,” he remarked.
In response, Agoye expressed gratitude to the commissioner for giving him the chance to lead the squad and work as head coach. He wished the club all the best for their further pursuits.
“To the club as they embark on their next chapter, I offer my sincerest wishes, and to the incoming coach, I extend my heartfelt best wishes for success,” he expressed to the media.
According to NAN, Sunshine Stars currently occupy the 12th position on the log with 22 points accumulated from 19 matches.
