One person has been arrested in connection with a recent attack on the Mempeasem settlement in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.
Mediaglobalist has received confirmation of the attack and arrest from Daboya police sources.
A violent attack occurred in the community on Monday, February 12, resulting in the destruction of multiple properties worth thousands of Cedis.
As per reports from the Savannah Regional Security Council (SREGSEC) and local authorities in the District, there is a suspicion that the incident is a reprisal for the attack that occurred a year ago, which resulted in multiple properties being damaged and forced the locals to leave the community.
The Gonja Chief and his followers were forced to leave the community after the incident because they were afraid for their safety.
Mempeasem was thought to be a diversified agricultural community with Dagombas, Mamprusis, Gonjas, and Tamprumas living there until recently.
But since the chieftaincy conflicts and land boundary disputes between the Gonjas and Mamprusis broke out, this perception has changed.
As part of the government’s attempts to encourage decentralized development in the area, the formation of the Savannah and North East Regions from the former Northern Region, which involved disagreements over land ownership and boundaries, marked the beginning of the unrest in Mempeasem.
Regarding the recent attacks in Mempeasem, the Gonjas and Mamprusis have both decided to keep quiet.
Mediaglobalist’s checks at the Savannah Regional Police command indicate that more police officers have been sent to the neighborhood to maintain law and order.
