The Nkawkaw district court has taken action regarding the recent attacks in Kwahu Bepong by remanding all 37 individuals who were arrested. Their next appearance in court is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2024.

Presided over by His Worship Isaac Adjei, the court addressed the cases of all 37 suspects apprehended by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in connection to the assaults on the Bepong Chiefs palace and several police officers in Kwahu Bepong, Eastern Region.

Initially, the Police Service detained 25 individuals linked to the attacks, with an additional 12 suspects arrested later in relation to the same incident.

The violent incident at the Bepong Chiefs Palace on February 4, 2024, resulted in injuries to seven individuals, including five police officers, with tragic consequences.

The background of the events reveals a grim sequence of events. Amidst efforts by the police to rescue a suspected murderer, Kwasi Tenkorang, accused of killing two individuals at Adwumasu, a farming community within the Kwahu South Municipality, chaos ensued. Tenkorang, allegedly an ex-convict, had reportedly raped and murdered a 45-year-old woman, Akua Kyerewaa. Attempting to intervene, Kwasi Antwi, the victim’s 65-year-old brother, was fatally struck on the head during the altercation.

Eyewitnesses, like Frederick, narrowly escaped harm as they witnessed the tragic events unfold. Following the suspect’s arrest on February 4th, tensions rose within the community. Members demanded the suspect’s immediate release for what they saw as swift justice, leading to a standoff with the police.

The situation escalated when the police intervened to prevent the lynching of the suspect, resulting in an attack on the officers by the enraged crowd, who resorted to throwing stones and other objects in retaliation.
