The Attorney General’s office has announced plans to transfer the case involving Patience Botwe, who worked as a house help for Cecilia Dapaah, from the circuit court to the High Court.
Botwe and seven others have been undergoing trial for the past three months, following their arrest on suspicion of stealing over 1 million dollars and 350,000 euros from the residence of the former sanitation minister.
These allegations have sparked investigations into corruption and related matters concerning Cecilia Dapaah and her spouse.
During a court session on Wednesday, DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, accompanied by Superintendent Sylvester Asare and Senior State Attorney Akosua Agyepomaa Agyemang, informed the court of a new charge sheet filed at the High Court.
ASP Nyamekye stated that the High Court Registrar had yet to assign a hearing date, delaying communication to the Circuit Court and subsequent withdrawal of the current charge sheet.
He further explained that once a hearing date is set at the High Court, the charge sheet in the Circuit Court would be withdrawn accordingly.
DSP Nyamekye informed the court, “The State Attorney informed me that they have submitted an updated charge sheet to the High Court yesterday, awaiting issuance of a hearing date.”
He stated that if a date is allocated, the Prosecution “will request permission from the Court to withdraw the case from the Circuit Court and proceed with proceedings at the High Court.”
All accused individuals were present in court except for the eighth accused, who remains at large.
Patience Botwe, aged 18, employed as a hairdresser; Sarah Agyei, aged 30, currently unemployed; Benjamin Sowah, aged 29, working as a plumber; Malik Dauda, aged 34, also unemployed; Christiana Achab, engaged in trading activities; Job Pomary, employed as a mechanic; and Yahaya Sumaila, operating as an excavator operator, were facing provisional charges comprising 14 counts of offenses.
The eighth accused individual, facing similar charges, is currently evading authorities.
Pleas for the 14 provisional counts, including conspiracy and dishonestly receiving, have not yet been entered by the accused.
