Ahmed Musa, Nigeria’s national team captain, expressed regret to the Nigerian populace for the Super Eagles’ failure to secure victory in the recently concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire.

Musa conveyed his apology during a private discussion with Daily Trust at a Breakfast Reception organized by MTN Nigeria in Abuja on Tuesday. The team arrived in the capital on Monday night after finishing as runners-up in the tournament.

In a closely contested match at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday, the host nation, Cote D’Ivoire, came from behind at halftime to clinch a 2-1 victory over Nigeria.

Nigeria’s last AFCON triumph was in 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they defeated Burkina Faso 1-0.

“It is a somber moment for all of us, but that’s the reality of life. We will continue to give our best because we have a long journey ahead,” Musa stated.

“We are truly grateful for the overwhelming support from all Nigerians. We apologize for not bringing the cup home, but we will bounce back,” Musa added.

Additionally, William Troost-Ekong, the stand-in captain of the Super Eagles and the recipient of the 2024 AFCON Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, expressed optimism about the team’s performance in Cote D’Ivoire, conveying hope for a bright future.

“We appreciate Nigerians for their unwavering support. We have given our all, and they have made us proud. We will strive for better performances in the future. This is just the beginning,” Troost-Ekong affirmed.

Jose Peseiro, the 63-year-old Portuguese coach of the Super Eagles, commended the team’s performance, describing their games as fantastic. He also thanked the government and people of Nigeria for their support.

Mr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, praised the Super Eagles and expressed confidence in their potential to win the next AFCON tournament.

Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), acknowledged the disappointment of not clinching the AFCON trophy but stressed Nigerians’ pride in the Eagles’ efforts.
